How big can they get? What’s the largest so far detected? Where does an 18 billion solar mass black hole hide? We’ve never seen them directly… yet we know they are there… Lurking within dense star clusters… Or wandering the dust lanes of the galaxy…. Where they prey on stars… Or swallow planets whole. Our Milky Way may harbor millions of these black holes… the ultra dense remnants of dead stars. But now, in the universe far beyond our galaxy, there’s evidence of something even more ominous… A breed of black holes that have reached incomprehensible size and destructive power. It has taken a new era in astronomy to find them… High-tech instruments in space tuned to sense high-energy forms of light — x-rays and gamma rays — that are invisible to our eyes. New precision telescopes equipped with technologies that allow them to cancel out the blurring effects of the atmosphere… and see to the far reaches of the universe. Peering into distant galaxies, astronomers are now finding evidence that space and time can be shattered by eruptions so vast they boggle the mind. We are just beginning to understand the impact these outbursts have had on the universe around us. That understanding recently took a leap forward. A team operating at the Subaru Observatory atop Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano looked out to one of the deepest reaches of the universe… And captured a beam of light that had taken nearly 13 billion years to reach us. It was a messenger from a time not …

Is this autotuned? If so, shame on you. If not, your voice is not my style. Still, very impressive.

@kick808gs – No. An asteroid that hit Earth would wipe out most things living on it. Though the immediate impact may not, in a matter of short time (minutes or hours) the entire Earth would be covered in a dust cloud blocking out the Sun’s light. Depending on the strength of the impact and the size of the asteroid, this dust cloud would last months or even years, killing plants and freezing the planet. A black hole is far less likely to eat Earth, but asteroids are always a danger.

@chibiariel um yes a black hole is. if an asteroid hit it wouldnt wipe out the entire human race. a black hole on the other hand will just gobble us all up whole without chewing.

@KONGtuffSu – But they don’t. They teach scientific theories, which, like I said, are fact. They don’t teach hypotheses unless maybe you’re in a high level class that needs to learn about them.

@MontanaCountryGal – Huh? The stuff doesn’t go anywhere except inside the black hole. Or spit out in a gamma ray.

@OhirumeAmaterasu – Not really. You can orbit around a black hole, just like we orbit around the Sun. You would need the proper calculations if you wanted to venture to do that, of course. You would even experience a difference in time: Depending on the black hole and speed of your starship, if you came back to Earth, everyone would have experienced double the time you did! So, if you orbited for 6 months, everyone on Earth would have experienced a year. (Or some variation.)

@awsomegamernerd – You mean the Noodle Effect or Spaghettification, where the closest part of a thing to a black hole is pulled away in strands like spaghetti. In a supermassive black hole, this happens after entering the event horizon. And this is scientific theory, which means that it is a fact, not a hypothesis. Also, micro black holes have been observed in the LHC, so there’s actually evidence of this happening, not just mathematical equations.
KONGtuffSu

@chibiariel That is fine but we need not teach a theory as a fact is my point.
chibiariel

@burken123 – We can ‘see’ the event horizon of a black hole, which is what is depicted in these videos. You can see light that is behind a black hole, because it warps, and is visible around the event horizon (they show that in the video as well).

@KONGtuffSu – Scientific theories are facts.
They have many reasons to believe these things, based on calculations and evidence gathered from space itself. If you do research on how they do these things, you start to see that they can be pretty accurate. No one says for absolutely sure we know, but you need to assume you know based on the information/evidence we have, or we won’t get anywhere. Saying, ‘Well, we just can’t know for sure,’ is useless.

@KONGtuffSu spacetime acts the save everywhere by the laws we know about. That said, when you watch something about the cosmos. You should go whit a open mind, the commentary would exhaust the viewer by saying “this is a theory” “this is fact” “we guess” “we think” all the time. That said, physicsist are pretty sure in about most things explained in shows sutch as this. And they build rockets propes so why not belive them?

@Fingerboardables – It would disperse, I assume. That’s what the micro black holes that are created in the LHC do. But I don’t think it’s likely: The reason the micro black holes ‘die’ is because they don’t have enough energy sustain themselves. I doubt black holes like these have a problem with gaining energy from their surroundings!

@H0otenanny physics of space and here on earth act differently. I’m not saying we can’t see a ton of stuff. im saying just cuz we see it doesn’t mean we know what is going on. my point is, we can really only have theories. and my problem with it is that they are talking about theories as if they are facts.
